Golden route long course of Spring

This route takes you through Hyogo Prefecture over three nights and four days. You can enjoy history, culture, hot springs, cuisine, various workshops, nature, and shopping all in one package. On the first day, you set out to shop for Kobe beef in Kobe. On the second day, you tour an old castle town and see the breathtaking sights of San’in Kaigan Geopark. On the third and fourth days, you will tour Himeji Castle, a World Heritage site, as well as see the seasonal flowers of Awaji Island. In the evening, you will stay at noted hot springs resorts like Arima Hot Spring, Kinosaki Hot Spring, and Sumoto Hot Spring.

Walk around Kitano

Kitano Kobo no Machi (Kitano Meister Garden) is located in the Kitano area of Kobe. In a building that was once a primary school, you can browse through a host of confectioneries, bakeries and other assorted shops. Enjoy crafting traditional Japanese candles and taking part in other craft events. From here you can walk to the Ijinkan (historic Western residence) quarter, the old foreign concession district and Kobe Chinatown.

The standout piece of Kobe cuisine is its famous Kobe beef. Kobe beef is one of Japan’s signature beefs and is one of the highest grades available. Nada Gogo (Nada Sake) sake brewery

Nadagogo is an area where numerous signature Japanese breweries congregate. This “home of brewing” is chock-full of sights to see. There are facilities everywhere that relate to brewing in some way. You can take tours of the brewing process and see exhibits on brewing culture. Some will also give you samples of sake to try. This is your chance to find your favorite Japanese sake!

The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum

The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum is the memorial hall of Osamu Tezuka, a famous Japanese cartoonist. The museum is located in the Takarazuka city where Osamu Tezuka was born. Character goods and original prints such as of Astro Boy are on display within the hall. There is also a corner where visitors can make their own animation. The library has a variety of Osamu Tezuka manga for you to read. There are also versions in languages other than Japanese, too.

Arima Hot Spring is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan.It is an exemplary Japanese hot spring.The site can be reached by car in 30 min from Osaka and Kobe, and in less than 1 h from Kyoto.
The hot springs known as "Kinsen" are rich in iron and the water has a reddish-brown hue. Hot springs with clear water are called "Ginsen". You should explore hot spring towns and their many gift shops. The inns and hotels here serve delicious local cuisine.

The Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo

The Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo specializes in the exhibition of ceramics created in Hyogo Prefecture. Tamba-yaki, for example, is one of Japan’s most ancient pottery traditions. Other types of ceramic art exhibited here include Sanda-yaki, Tozan-yaki, Izushi-yaki and Minpei-yaki. All of these specimens are artworks of exceptionally high value. Don’t miss this chance to view one of Japan’s finest collections of ceramic art.

Sasayama Castle Ruins, Sasayama Castle town

Sasayama Castle retains a massive stone wall from when the castle was fortified. The looming stone walls are impressive to behold. There is also a historic building that was used to entertain guests in olden times. Today, it serves as a museum. In spring, about 1000 cherry blossoms bloom along the moat of Sasayama castle. This area retains many traditional historic buildings. I recommend taking a stroll of the old castle town here.

(lunch) Castle town Izushi Izushi sarasoba

Izushi in Toyooka is famous as an old castle town. Sites includes Izushi Castle and old samurai residences. For lunch, stop for soba at one of the town’s highly reputed soba shops. Upwards of forty soba noodle shops line the streets of Izushi. The soba in Izushi is presented on small white plates. Five of these make one serving. If you’re still hungry, you can add extra orders by the plate.

Kinosaki Marine World

Kinosaki Marine World is an aquarium offering exquisite views of the Sea of Japan. Inside the complex are water tanks of 12m deep and others, where you can observe numerous species of ocean and river fish. The dolphin and seal shows are especially popular. You can also try fishing for horse mackerel. They will fry up the mackerel you catch on the spot. With a reservation, you can even touch the dolphins directly.

Kinosaki Hot Spring is said to have been discovered by an Oriental stork around 1400 years ago. The willow trees that line the banks of the Otanigawa River are a sight of uplifting beauty. The roads are lined with wooden Japanese inns and shops. Instead of the baths at the inn, you can avail yourself of the 7 different types of public baths that line the streets. Don a yukata robe and tour the seven hot springs.

Takeda Castle Ruins

Takeda Castle is a castle built on a mountain 354m above sea level. Atop the mountain is a massive stone wall. The structure strongly resembles the shape of a sleeping tiger. In clear-skied autumn mornings, a fog sometimes covers the area making it look like the stone walls are floating in the clouds. This phenomenon has made some also refer to the castle as the "Castle in the Sky".

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is the first Japanese world cultural heritage site registered with Unesco, and is a castle recognized worldwide. It is referred to as ‘Shirasagi-jo (white egret castle)’ because of its white plastered earthen walls. After the completion of 5-year restoration work, the castle was fully reopened in March of 2015. The castle is one of the most beautiful in Japan. The scenery looking out from the tenshukaku (castle tower) is picturesque. A guided tour is available for foreigners free of charge.

(lunch) Akashi-yaki(Tamago-yaki) Uonotana Shopping Arcade

Akashi-yaki is also referred to as “fried egg” and is a specialty of Akashi. The soft dough gives way to octopus inside. While it resembles Osaka’s famous takoyaki dish, Akashi-yaki is dipped in broth when eating. The Uonotana Shopping Arcade is a market lined with fresh fish caught in the Seto Inland Sea. The 350m long arcade features 100 shops selling all sorts of fresh fish and sea products.

Maiko Marine Promenade, Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which links Kobe to Awaji Island, is the longest suspension bridge in the world. The view of the Akashi Strait and the bridge across it is unforgettable. If you want to get a great view of the bridge, the Maiko Marine Promenade, an observation walkway, is recommended. You can walk across the sea at 47m above sea level. This walkway has views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.

Awaji Yume Butai

Awaji Yumebutai is a multi-use complex designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. In Kiseki no Hoshi Botanical Museum exhibits a garden full of rare and exotic plants. An incredible 30,000 plants of 3,000 species are exhibited here year-round. Kiseki no Hoshi’s approach to exhibiting plants is unique, creating an experience you won’t soon forget.

Sumoto Hot Spring is a largest hot spring resort on Awaji Island. In 1993, new hot springs were discovered. At Japanese inns and hotels, there are open-air baths with great views of the sea. The water at Sumoto Hot Spring is clear and is considered to be very good for the skin. At the Japanese inns and hotels, you can eat delicious seafood caught locally around Awaji Island.

Awaji Puppet Theater

One ancient craft tradition of Japan that is alive and well on Awaji Island is ningyo-joruri. A forerunner of bunraku, ningyo-joruri is a kind of puppet theater with narrative and dialog, usually accompanied by shamisen music. Awaji Island was once the site of puppet troupes of all shapes and sizes. These plays were performed not just on Awaji Island, but throughout Japan. Awaji puppet theater is still performed regularly today. If you want to see these performances, go to the Awaji Doll Joruri Pavilion.

Kobe Harbor Land and Meriken Park

Kobe Harbor Land and Meriken Park, located at Kobe’s port, is a signature destination of Kobe. Kobe Port Tower, which is a Kobe landmark, provides an unbroken view of the Kobe cityscape. Another fun pastime is taking a pleasure boat ride. At this location, visitors can get their fill of Kobe sightseeing, including gourmet cuisine and shopping.
