Golden Route Long Course of Spring

This route takes you through Hyogo Prefecture over 3 nights and 4 days. You can enjoy history, culture, hot springs, cuisine, various workshops, nature, and shopping all in one package. On the first day, you will set out to a restaurant in Kobe for the famous Kobe Beef. On the second day, you will tour around an old castle town and see the breathtaking views of San'in Kaigan Geopark. On the third day and forth day, you will visit Himeji Castle, a World Cultural Heritage, and head to Awaji Island for seasonal flowers. At night, you will stay in famous Onsen resorts such as Arima Onsen, Kinosaki Onsen, and Sumoto Onsen.

Walk around Kitano

Kitano Kobo no Machi (Kitano Meister Garden) is located in the Kitano area in Kobe. In a building that was once a primary school, there are sweets shops, bakeries and other assorted shops. Enjoy crafting traditional Japanese candles and taking part in other craft events. You can walk to the Ijinkan (historic Western residence) quarter, the Former Foreign Settlement and Kobe Chinatown from here.

Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum

Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum is the memorial hall of Osamu Tezuka, a famous Japanese comic artist. The museum is located in Takarazuka city where Osamu Tezuka was born. Original prints, goods of famous characters such as of Astro Boy are on display. There is also a booth where visitors can make their own animation. The library has a variety of Osamu Tezuka manga for you to read. There are also versions in languages other than Japanese, too.

Arima Onsen is one of the oldest and the most famous hot spring in Japan. It is located 30 minutes by car from Osaka and Kobe, and in less than 1 hour from Kyoto.
The hot springs here are called 'Gold Springs', rich in iron, and has a color of reddish brown. The clear hot springs here are called 'Silver Springs'. It is highly recommended to explore the Onsen resort town with many gift shops. Enjoy delicious local cuisine at ryokans and hotels.

The Museum of Ceramic Art

The Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo specializes in the exhibition of ceramics created in Hyogo Prefecture. Tamba-yaki is one of the most traditional pottery in Japan. Also Sanda-yaki, Tozan-yaki, Izushi-yaki and Minpei-yaki are on display. All of these have exceptionally high value. You can see one of Japan's finest collection of ceramic art.

Sasayama Castle Ruins, Sasayama Castle Town

Sasayama Castle Ruins is one of the finest examples of castle architecture in Japan. Today only the massive stone walls are remained from the original castle. The current O-shoin, rebuilt in April 2000, exhibits how Sasayama Castle was built and the Castle town was formed in an earlier era. Surrounded by an outer moat brimming with water, the Castle Ruins is known as one of the best spot for cherry blossoms in spring. Around the Castle Ruins Japanese traditional cityscape remains as Castle town, and you can tour around Samurai residents.

Izushi in Toyooka is famous as an old castle town. You can tour around historical sites such as Izushi Castle and old Samurai residences. Enjoy famous 'Izushi Soba' for lunch. There are more than 40 soba restaurants in the town. Izushi soba is served on small white plates. A set of five plates is a single serving. If you’re still hungry, you can add extra orders by one plate.

Kinosaki Marine World

Kinosaki Marine World is an aquarium with exquisite views of the Sea of Japan. There is a water tank of 12m deep, where you can see numerous species of ocean and river fish. The dolphin and seal shows are especially popular. You can also try fishing for horse mackerel. They will fry up the mackerel you catch on the spot. With a reservation, you can even touch the dolphins.

Accommodations Kinosaki Onsen

Kinosaki Onsen is said to be discovered by an 'Kounotori', Oriental stork around 1400 years ago. It is a beautiful place with the willow trees planted on the banks of Otanigawa River. The traditional Japanese hot spring town is remained here, such as Japanese Ryokan made of wood. There are renowend 7 public baths in Kinosaki Onsen, that are more popular than baths in Ryokans. Enjoy visiting 7 baths wearing a Yukata (light cotton summer kimono).

Takeda Castle Ruins

Takeda Castle is built on a mountain 354m above sea level. On the top of the mountain there is a massive stone wall left. The figure resembles the shape of a sleeping tiger. In autumn mornings when the weather is fine often fog occurs, and the castle wall appears to float on the clouds. This phenomenon has earned it a nickname of 'Castle in the Sky'.

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is the first Japanese World Cultural Heritage Site registered by UNESCO recognized worldwide, and often called as 'Shirasagi-jo' (White Heron Castle) because of its white plastered walls. After the 5-year restoration work, the castle was fully reopened in March 2015. It's one of the most beautiful castle in Japan, The scenery from Tenshukaku (castle tower) is picturesque. A guided tour for foreign tourists is available free of charge.

(Lunch) Uonotana Shopping Arcade Akashiyaki

Akashiyaki, sometimes called tamagoyaki, is a specialty cuisine of Akashi City. o make Akashiyaki, chunks of octopus are embedded in soft dough. Looks similar to Takoyaki, Osaka specialty, Akashiyaki is dipped in dashi (soup stock made from fish and kelp) before eating. Uonotana Shopping Arcade is lined with markets of fresh fish caught in the Seto Inland Sea. In the 350m long arcade there are about 100 stores of mainly fresh fish and seafood.

Maiko Marine Promenade, Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which links Kobe to Awaji Island, is the longest suspension bridge in the world. The view of the Akashi Strait and the bridge is unforgettable. If you want to get a great view of the bridge, the Maiko Marine Promenade, an observation walkway, is recommended. You can walk across the sea at 47m above sea level. This walkway has views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.

Awaji Yume Butai

Awaji Yumebutai is a compound facility designed by world-famous architect, Tadao Ando. One of the biggest greenhouse in Japan 'Kiseki no Hoshi Botanical Museum' exhibits a lot of rare and exotic plants. About 30,000 plants of 3,000 species are exhibited here throughout year. The way plants are exhibited is very unique and creative here.

Accommodations Sumoto Onsen

Sumoto Onsen is the largest spa resort in Awaji Island, where new hot spring were discovered in 1993. At local Ryokan and hotels, there are open-air baths with great views of the ocean. The water at Sumoto Onsen is clean and said to be very good for the skin. At the Japanese inns and hotels, you can eat delicious seafood caught locally around Awaji Island.

Awaji Puppet Theater

Ningyo Joruri (Japanese puppet show), traditional arts of Japan is still inherited in Awaji Island. There used to be various puppet troupes in Awaji island. These plays were performed not just on Awaji Island, but throughout Japan. Awaji Puppet Theater still has regular shows, today.
