This is a course for touring Hyogo Prefecture over 2 nights and 3 days. On the first day, Kobe beef and shopping are enjoyed in Kobe. On the second day, there is a walk around a castle town, and the nature of Sanin Kaigan Geopark is enjoyed. On the third day, there is a tour of representative castles of Japan, World Cultural Heritage Site Himeji Castle and the ruins of Takeda Castle. The overnight accommodations are at Arima Hot Spring and Kinosaki Hot Spring.These are two popular hot-spring areas that are among the most historic in Japan.

Kobe Meriken Park / Harborland

Kobe Harborland and Meriken Park at Kobe Port are representative sightseeing spots of Kobe. Kobe Port Tower, which is a Kobe landmark, provides an unbroken view of the Kobe cityscape. From here, it is possible to take a pleasure cruise. At this location, visitors can get their fill of Kobe sightseeing, including gourmet cuisine and shopping.

(lunch) Walk around Kitano / Kobe Beef

Kyu-kyoryuchi (Old Foreign Settlement) in Kobe is a location where foreigners resided when Kobe Port opened in 1868. There are still many Western-style buildings here that are constructed out of brick and stone. Currently this is Kobe’s central influential fashion district. It has many shops of well-known brands, clothing stores, and sweets shops. When eating lunch here, Kobe beef is highly recommended.

Nada Gogo (Nada Sake) sake brewery

Nadagogo is the location with a collection of sake brewers that represent Japan. Here, visitors can enjoy the sights of a town with sake breweries. Numerous facilities related to sake brewing can be found here. There are a number of facilities that offer sake-brewing tours and exhibit materials related to sake brewing. At some of the facilities it is possible to try the Japanese sake brewed there. Discover your favorite Japanese sake.

Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum

The Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum is Japan’s only museum dedicated to carpentry tools. There are about 1,000 carpentry tools on display here. Carpentry tool shapes and methods of use differ between Japan, where soft wood is used, and overseas, where hard wood is used. The differences between Japanese and overseas carpentry tools are explained in a clear manner. There is a full-size model of a tearoom, and it is possible to get a close look at the sophistication of Japanese wood construction techniques.

Arima Onsen is one of the oldest onsens in Japan. It is a signature destination in Japan. It is a 30-minute drive from Osaka and Kobe, and less than 1 hour from Kyoto. The hot springs here that are referred to as “gold springs” have a very high iron content so are a reddish brown color. The clear hot springs here are called “silver springs”. Taking a stroll through the hot spring town, where there are souvenir shops, is recommended. Delicious local cuisine can be enjoyed at ryokan (Japanese inns) and hotels.

Genbudo Cave

Genbudo Park is one of the major spots at Sanin Kaigan Geopark. It has caves that were formed by volcanic activity about 1.6 million years ago. Here, the rock cracks that were created when lava cooled and hardened are very beautiful. There are five caves: Genbu-do Cave, as well as Seiryu-do Cave, Byakko-do Cave, Kitasuzaku-do Cave, and Minamisuzaku-do Cave. Genbu-do Cave has been designated as a natural monument by the national government.

Izushi Eiraku-kan

Izushi in Toyooka City is famous as a castle town. Here it is possible to take a tour of Izushi Castle, samurai quarters, and so on. This is a very historic town that is sometimes referred to as Japan’s “little Kyoto. Eirakukan is a theater that gave popular Japanese theater performances. Visitors can take a close look at the stage settings used for kabuki. Each autumn, Japan’s famous kabuki actors perform here.

(lunch) Izushi-soba

Izushi in Toyooka City is famous for soba (buckwheat noodles). There are over 40 soba shops in the town of Izushi. The soba of Izushi is served on small white plates. Five plates is a serving for one person. If a customer would like to eat more soba, plates can be added one at a time. Visiting a soba shop here is highly recommended.

Hyogo Prefectural Homeland for the Oriental White Stork

Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork protects and breeds the Oriental stork. The Oriental stork is the bird of Hyogo Prefecture. Toyooka City, where the park is located, was the Oriental stork’s last habitat in Japan. The park began releasing Oriental storks into the wild in September 2005. The park has observation facilities, so it is possible to look at these birds up close.

Kinosaki Onsen is Onsen said to that Oriental White Stor discovered approximately 1,400 years ago. It is a place with very beautiful rows of weeping willows that blossom along Otani-gawa River. There are also rows of wooden ryokan (Japanese inns) and shops. It is possible to bathe not only in the baths of ryokan, but also seven public bathhouses that each have different characteristics. How about putting on a yukata (light cotton kimono) and visiting seven different hot spring facilities?

Takeda Castle Ruins

Takeda Castle, which is now ruins, was constructed on a mountain peak at an elevation of 354 m. It is a representative mountain castle of Japan. At certain times of the year, the castle appears as if it is floating on a sea of clouds. As such, it is sometimes referred to as the “castle of the sky. The ruins of Takeda Castle are often surrounded by a sea of clouds in autumn through winter in the early morning when it is very clear and there is a morning mist. The castle appearing to float in the sky is a truly impressive sight.

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle, which was Japan’s first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, is a castle that is recognized worldwide. Due to its white plaster walls, it is sometimes called “Shirasagi (Egret) Castle. ” The castle had a grand opening in March 2015 after the completion of five years of renovation work. This is one of the most beautiful castles in Japan. The view from the keep is impressive. Guides offer tours here free of charge and can accommodate foreign visitors.
