This route takes you through Hyogo Prefecture over 2 nights and 3 days. On the first day, you will set out to a restaurant in Kobe for the famous Kobe Beef. On the second day, you will walk around a castle town, and enjoy the nature of San'in Kaigan Geopark. On the third day, you will visit two famous castles of Japan, Himeji Castle (World Cultural Heritage) and Takeda Castle Ruins. At night, you will stay in Arima Onsen and Kinosaki Onsen. These are both very historic and popular Onsen spots in Japan.

Kobe Harbor Land and Meriken Park

Kobe Harbor Land and Meriken Park, located at Kobe Port, is a signature destination of Kobe. Port Tower, the landmark of Kobe City, provides a sweeping view of the cityscape. There is also a pleasure boat ride. Enjoy shopping, gourmet food and sightseeing.

(Lunch) Walk around Kitano, Kobe Beef

Former Foreign Settlement in Kobe is where foreigners resided when Kobe Port opened in 1868. There are many Western-style buildings remained here that are constructed out of brick and stone. Currently this place is known as influential fashion district in Kobe. There are many well-known brand shops, clothing stores, and sweets shops. When eating lunch here, Kobe beef is highly recommended.

Nada Gogo Sake Brewery

Nada Gogo is dotted with famous Japanese Sake breweries. A spring water that wells up in Nada called 'Miyamizu' is suited to Japanese Sake. You can also enjoy Sake breweries townscape here. There are museums about Sake brewing too in the area. You can see the process of Sake brewing and the display of material used for Sake making, as well as Sake tasting. Find your favorite Japanese Sake!

Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum

Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum is an only museum in Japan devoted to carpentry tools. There are about 1,000 carpentry tools on display. Generally soft wood is used in Japan, on the other hand hard wood is used in most other countries. Therefore the shape and usage of carpentry tools is very different in Japan. The museum provides clear explanations of the differences of the distinctive features of Japanese carpentry tools. There is a full-size model of a tearoom, and you can get a close look at the sophistication of Japanese wood construction techniques.

Accommodations Arima Onsen

Arima Onsen is one of the oldest and the most famous hot spring in Japan. It is located 30 minutes by car from Osaka and Kobe, and in less than 1 hour from Kyoto. The hot springs here are called 'Gold Springs', rich in iron, and has a color of reddish brown. The clear hot springs here are called 'Silver Springs'. It is highly recommended to explore the Onsen resort town with many gift shops. Enjoy delicious local cuisine at ryokans and hotels.

Genbudo Cave

Genbudo Park is one of the major spots at Sanin Kaigan Geopark. It has caves that were formed by volcanic activity about 1.6 million years ago. The rock cracks created when lava cooled and hardened are very beautiful. There are five caves: Genbu-do Cave, as well as Seiryu-do Cave, Byakko-do Cave, Kitasuzaku-do Cave, and Minamisuzaku-do Cave. Genbu-do Cave has been designated as a Natural Monument by the government.

Izushi Eiraku-kan

Izushi in Toyooka City is famous as a castle town. You can take a tour of Izushi Castle, Samurai Residence and so on. This is a very historic town and sometimes referred to as 'Little Kyoto'. Eiraku-kan is a theater for popular Japanese drama performances. You can take a close look at the stage settings for Kabuki. Famous Kabuki actors in Japan perform here in autumn every year.

(Lunch) Izushi Sarasoba

Izushi in Toyooka City is famous for soba (buckwheat noodles). There are more than 40 soba restaurants in the town. Izushi soba is served on small white plates. A set of five plates is a single serving. If you’re still hungry, you can add extra orders by one plate. Visiting soba restaurants here is highly recommended.

Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork

Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork have been working to protect and breed 'Kounotori' Oriental white stork. Oriental stork is designated as the prefectural bird of Hyogo Prefecture. Toyooka City, where the park is located, was the Oriental stork’s last habitat in Japan. Since September 2005, the park started releasing storks into the wild. The park has an observatory where you can see storks up close.

Accommodations Kinosaki Onsen

Kinosaki Onsen is said to be discovered by an 'Kounotori', Oriental stork around 1400 years ago. It is a beautiful place with the willow trees planted on the banks of Otanigawa River. The traditional Japanese hot spring town is remained here, such as Japanese Ryokan made of wood. There are renowend 7 public baths in Kinosaki Onsen, that are more popular than baths in Ryokans. Enjoy visiting 7 baths wearing a Yukata (light cotton summer kimono).

Takeda Castle Ruins

Takeda Castle Ruins in Asago City is one of the most famous Yamashiro (mountain castle), built on top of the mountain of an elevation of 353 meters. Depending on the season, it looks like the castle is floating on the clouds, and often called 'Castle in the Sky'. Especially on sunny early mornings in autumn to winter, morning fog tends to occur and Takeda Castle Ruins is wrapped in a sea of clouds. It's a breathtaking view and worth the name of 'Castle in the Sky'.

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is the first Japanese World Cultural Heritage Site registered by UNESCO recognized worldwide, and often called as 'Shirasagi-jo' (White Heron Castle) because of its white plastered walls. After the 5-year restoration work, the castle was fully reopened in March 2015. It's one of the most beautiful castle in Japan, The scenery from Tenshukaku (castle tower) is picturesque. A guided tour for foreign tourists is available free of charge.
