This course focuses on history and culture in Japan. You will stay 2 days and 1 night, and visit historical sites such as Himeji Castle, UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. To learn Japanese culture, you will visit Japan Toy Museum, Awaji Ningyo-za (puppet theater), Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum. Honpukuji Temple in Awaji Island has very unique main hall designed by Tadao Ando. You will stay at Onsen resort in the South of Awaji Island. Awaji Onsen and good seafood will ease your mind.

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is the first Japanese World Cultural Heritage Site registered by UNESCO, recognized worldwide, and often called as 'Shirasagi-jo' (White Heron Castle) because of its white plastered walls. After the 5-year restoration work, the castle was fully reopened in March 2015. It's one of the most beautiful castle in Japan. The scenery from Tenshukaku (castle tower) is picturesque. A guided tour for foreign tourists is available free of charge.

(Lunch) Koko-en

Koko-en is a 3.5-hectare park with 9 different Japanese gardens located inside Himeji Castle. You can take a walk in traditional Japanese gardens. Famed for its beauty of cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn colored leaves, this park is an ideal place to enjoy four seasons in Japan and popular with visitors throughout a year. There is a restaurant inside the park where you can see the Japanese garden. Their Conger eel bowl is highly recommended.

Japan Toy Museum

Japan Toy Museum exhibits rare toys from Japan and around the world. Located 10km away from Himeji Castle, World Cultural Heritage site, the museum is built in the traditional style of Japanese storehouse. Over 90,000 artifacts are housed here including traditional Japanese toys as well as toys and dolls from 160 countries worldwide. There is also a booth where you can touch and play with some of the toys.

Honpuku-ji Temple

Honpuku-ji is located in Awaji Island, famous for its main temple building designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. This main temple building called Mizumi-do has a unique structure, a statue of Buddha is enshrined under an elliptical pond with water lilies and sacred lotuses blooming. The best time to see the water lilies is from May to September, while the sacred lotuses are most beautiful from June to July.

In Minami-Awaji Onsen Village, the geothermal hot springs gush from the ground in six places and creating six hot springs; Uzushio Onsen, Nandan Onsen, Mihara Onsen, Sunrise Onsen, Shiozaki Onsen and Tsutsui Onsen. Each of these hot springs is said to have beneficial effects for the skin. At the nearby Naruto Strait, you can see some of the largest whirlpools in the world. Each hot springs offers different benefits, why not try all of them?

Awaji Puppet Theater

Ningyo Joruri (Japanese puppet show), traditional arts of Japan is still inherited in Awaji Island. You can watch performance of Ningyo Joruri in Awaji Puppet Theater with the history of approximately 500 years. The technique to handle the puppets is very artistic. There is also an audio guide for foreign tourists. In Awaji Ningyo Joruri Museum located nearby, you can see the puppets and documents on display.

(Lunch) Uzushio Roadside Station

The closest Roadside Station to a real whirlpool in Japan. There are a restaurant and a cafe with stunning view of Onaruto Bridge, offering fresh and delicious local lunch. Also you'll find island's most extensive lineups of carefully selected souvenirs, including Awaji onions, seafood and many original products in the shop. There is 'Awajishima Onion Kitchen' restaurant, famous for 'Awajishima Burger' winner of the Local Burger Grand Prix. This Roadside Staiton is the very southern tip of Awaji Island, so make it the destination for your drive!

Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum

Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum is an only museum in Japan devoted to carpentry tools. There are about 1,000 carpentry tools on display. Generally soft wood is used in Japan, on the other hand hard wood is used in most other countries. Therefore the shape and usage of carpentry tools is very different in Japan. The museum provides clear explanations of the differences of the distinctive features of Japanese carpentry tools. A model of a skeleton tea house and the main temple structure of Toshodaiji Temple are on display, where you can see closely the sophisticated craftsmanship of the wooden architecture in Japan.
