This is a course for touring Hyogo Prefecture over 2 nights and 3 days. On the first day, you set out to shop for Kobe beef in Kobe. On the second day, there is a walk around a castle town, and the nature of Sanin Kaigan Geopark is enjoyed. On the third day, there is a tour of representative castles of Japan, World Cultural Heritage Site Himeji Castle and the ruins of Takeda Castle. The overnight accommodations are at Arima Hot Spring and Kinosaki Hot Spring.These are two popular hot-spring areas that are among the most historic in Japan.

Kobe Harbor Land and Meriken Park

Kobe Harbor Land and Meriken Park, located at Kobe’s port, is a signature destination of Kobe. Kobe Port Tower, which is a Kobe landmark, provides an unbroken view of the Kobe cityscape. Another fun pastime is taking a pleasure boat ride. At this location, visitors can get their fill of Kobe sightseeing, including gourmet cuisine and shopping.

(lunch) Walk around Kitano, Kobe Beef

Kyu-kyoryuchi (Old Foreign Settlement) in Kobe is a location where foreigners resided when Kobe Port opened in 1868. There are still many Western-style buildings here that are constructed out of brick and stone. Currently this is Kobe’s central influential fashion district. It has many shops of well-known brands, clothing stores, and sweets shops. When eating lunch here, Kobe beef is highly recommended.

Nada Gogo (Nada Sake) sake brewery

Nadagogo is the location with a collection of sake brewers that represent Japan. Here, visitors can enjoy the sights of a town with sake breweries. Numerous facilities related to sake brewing can be found here. There are a number of facilities that offer sake-brewing tours and exhibit materials related to sake brewing. Some will also give you samples of sake to try. This is your chance to find your favorite Japanese sake!

Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum

The Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum is Japan’s only museum dedicated to carpentry tools. There are about 1,000 carpentry tools on display here. Carpentry tool shapes and methods of use differ between Japan, where soft wood is used, and most other countries, where hard wood is generally used. The museum provides clear and engaging explanations of the differences of the distinctive features of Japanese carpentry tools. There is a full-size model of a tearoom, and it is possible to get a close look at the sophistication of Japanese wood construction techniques.

Arima Hot Spring is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan.It is an exemplary Japanese hot spring.The site can be reached by car in 30 min from Osaka and Kobe, and in less than 1 h from Kyoto. The hot springs here that are referred to as “gold springs” have a very high iron content so are a reddish brown color. The clear hot springs here are called “silver springs” . You should explore hot spring towns and their many gift shops. The inns and hotels here serve delicious local cuisine.

Genbudo Cave

Genbudo Park is one of the major spots at Sanin Kaigan Geopark. It has caves that were formed by volcanic activity about 1.6 million years ago. Here, the rock cracks that were created when lava cooled and hardened are very beautiful. There are five caves: Genbu-do Cave, as well as Seiryu-do Cave, Byakko-do Cave, Kitasuzaku-do Cave, and Minamisuzaku-do Cave. Genbu-do Cave has been designated as a natural monument by the national government.

Izushi Eiraku-kan

Izushi in Toyooka City is famous as a castle town. Here it is possible to take a tour of Izushi Castle, samurai quarters, and so on. This is a very historic town that is sometimes referred to as Japan’s “little Kyoto. ” Eirakukan is a theater that gave popular Japanese theater performances. Visitors can take a close look at the stage settings used for kabuki. Each autumn, Japan’s famous kabuki actors perform here.

(lunch) Izushi sarasoba

Izushi in Toyooka City is famous for soba (buckwheat noodles). Upwards of forty soba noodle shops line the streets of Izushi. The soba of Izushi is served on small white plates. Five plates is a serving for one person. If you’re still hungry, you can add extra orders by the plate. Visiting a soba shop here is highly recommended.

Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork

Researches at Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork have been working to protect and increase the population of 'konotori' Oriental white storks. Konotori is designated as the prefectural bird of Hyogo Prefecture. Toyooka City, where the park is located, was the Oriental stork’s last habitat in Japan. Since September 2005, efforts have been made to bring konotori back to wild. The park has an observatory where konotori can be observed up close.

Accommodations Kinosaki Hot Spring

Kinosaki Hot Spring is said to have been discovered by an Oriental stork around 1400 years ago. The willow trees that line the banks of the Otanigawa River are a sight of uplifting beauty. The roads are lined with wooden Japanese inns and shops. Instead of the baths at the inn, you can avail yourself of the 7 different types of public baths that line the streets. Don a yukata robe and tour the seven hot springs.

Takeda Castle sea of clouds

Takeda Castle Ruins

Takeda Castle, which is now ruins, was constructed on a mountain peak at an elevation of 354 m. It is a representative mountain castle of Japan. At certain times of the year, the castle appears as if it is floating on a sea of clouds. As such, it is sometimes referred to as the “castle of the sky. The ruins of Takeda Castle are often surrounded by a sea of clouds in autumn through winter in the early morning when it is very clear and there is a morning mist. The castle appearing to float in the sky is a truly impressive sight.

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is the first Japanese world cultural heritage site registered with Unesco, and is a castle recognized worldwide. It is referred to as ‘Shirasagi-jo (white egret castle)’ because of its white plastered earthen walls. After the completion of 5-year restoration work, the castle was fully reopened in March of 2015. The castle is one of the most beautiful in Japan. The scenery looking out from the tenshukaku (castle tower) is picturesque. A guided tour is available for foreigners free of charge.
