The Golden route top of Winter

This route takes you through Hyogo Prefecture over three nights and four days. You can enjoy history, culture, hot springs, cuisine, various workshops, nature, and shopping all in one package. On the first day, you set out to shop for Kobe beef in Kobe. On the second day, you tour an old castle town and see the breathtaking sights of San’in Kaigan Geopark. On the third and fourth days, you will tour Himeji Castle, a World Heritage site, as well as see the seasonal flowers of Awaji Island. In the evening, you will stay at noted hot springs resorts like Arima Hot Spring, Kinosaki Hot Spring, and Sumoto Hot Spring.

Walk around Kitano

Kitano Kobo no Machi (Kitano Meister Garden) is located in the Kitano area of Kobe. In a building that was once a primary school, you can browse through a host of confectioneries, bakeries and other assorted shops. Enjoy crafting traditional Japanese candles and taking part in other craft events. From here you can walk to the Ijinkan (historic Western residence) quarter, the old foreign concession district and Kobe Chinatown.

Nada Gogo (Nada Sake) sake brewery

Nadagogo is an area where numerous signature Japanese breweries congregate. This “home of brewing” is chock-full of sights to see. There are facilities everywhere that relate to brewing in some way. You can take tours of the brewing process and see exhibits on brewing culture. Some will also give you samples of sake to try. This is your chance to find your favorite Japanese sake!

Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art

The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art is an art gallery designed by internationally renowned architect Tadao Ando. Following extensive refurbishment, the gallery reopened in 2002 as part of the HAT Kobe renewal project. This unique building with a striking sea view includes a permanent exhibit dedicated to Ando. Among the facilities on the art gallery’s spacious campus are a fine-art information center, galleries, restaurants and cafés. Housed in the gallery are approximately 8,000 works of art, primarily by artists native to or having some other affinity with Hyogo Prefecture. A memorial gallery commemorates the lives and works of Ryohei Koiso and Heizo Kanayama, two of Japan’s best-known modern Western-style painters.

Arima Hot Spring is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan.It is an exemplary Japanese hot spring.The site can be reached by car in 30 min from Osaka and Kobe, and in less than 1 h from Kyoto.
The hot springs known as "Kinsen" are rich in iron and the water has a reddish-brown hue. Hot springs with clear water are called "Ginsen". You should explore hot spring towns and their many gift shops. The inns and hotels here serve delicious local cuisine.

The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum

The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum is the memorial hall of Osamu Tezuka, a famous Japanese cartoonist. The museum is located in the Takarazuka city where Osamu Tezuka was born. Character goods and original prints such as of Astro Boy are on display within the hall. There is also a corner where visitors can make their own animation. The library has a variety of Osamu Tezuka manga for you to read. There are also versions in languages other than Japanese, too.

Sasayama Castle O-shoin

The remnants of Sasayama Castle are among the finest examples of castle architecture in Japan. Today only the massive stone walls remain of the original building. The current Osho-in, rebuilt in April 2000, houses exhibits showing the appearance of Sasayama Castle in earlier eras and the form of the castle town that sprang up around it. Surrounded with an outer moat brimming with water, the castle remains are famed as an ideal place to admire the cherry blossoms. Around the castle the town retains the unmistakable look of a traditional Japanese castle town, and visitors can observe features such as the manors of the samurai.

The Tamba area, which encompasses the Cities of Sasayama and Tamba, is highly reputed for its hot-pot cooking using wild-boar meat. It is a renowned and popular dish in winter. The thinly sliced boar meat is arranged on the plate like the petals of a peony, from which the hot pot gets its name: botan-nabe (roughly, “peony hot pot”). The hot pot is flavored with miso and the boar meat is boiled together with vegetables and other locally gathered ingredients.

Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork

Researches at Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork have been working to protect and increase the population of 'konotori' Oriental white storks. Konotori is designated as the prefectural bird of Hyogo Prefecture. Toyooka City, where the park is located, was the Oriental stork’s last habitat in Japan. Since September 2005, efforts have been made to bring konotori back to wild. The park has an observatory where konotori can be observed up close.

Kinosaki Hot Spring

Kinosaki Hot Spring is said to have been discovered by an Oriental stork around 1400 years ago. The willow trees that line the banks of the Otanigawa River are a sight of uplifting beauty. The roads are lined with wooden Japanese inns and shops. Instead of the baths at the inn, you can avail yourself of the 7 different types of public baths that line the streets. Don a yukata robe and tour the seven hot springs.

Takeda Castle Ruins

Takeda Castle is a castle built on a mountain 354m above sea level. Atop the mountain is a massive stone wall. The structure strongly resembles the shape of a sleeping tiger. In clear-skied autumn mornings, a fog sometimes covers the area making it look like the stone walls are floating in the clouds. This phenomenon has made some also refer to the castle as the "Castle in the Sky".

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is the first Japanese world cultural heritage site registered with Unesco, and is a castle recognized worldwide. It is referred to as ‘Shirasagi-jo (white egret castle)’ because of its white plastered earthen walls. After the completion of 5-year restoration work, the castle was fully reopened in March of 2015. The castle is one of the most beautiful in Japan. The scenery looking out from the tenshukaku (castle tower) is picturesque. A guided tour is available for foreigners free of charge.

Oden is a boiled dish often consumed in Japanese homes, especially in the cold winter months. To make oden, ingredients such as eggs, octopus and daikon are boiled in dashi (soup stock made from fish and kelp). Usually oden is simply plucked from the broth and eaten as is, but in Himeji it is first marinated or dipped in ginger soy sauce. The flavor is exceptionally clean and fresh. In the City of Himeji, over 60 restaurants serve this popular item.

Kokoen

This 3.5-hectare park is made up of nine distinct Japanese gardens.It is possible for people of the general public to take walks in the Japanese gardens. Famed for the beauty of its cherry blossoms in the spring and the turning of the leaves in fall, this park is popular with visitors year-round and an ideal place to enjoy Japan’s four seasons. Inside the park is a restaurant, as well as a teahouse where you can enjoy matcha green tea and Japanese sweets.

Awaji Yume Butai

Awaji Yumebutai is a multi-use complex designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. In Kiseki no Hoshi Botanical Museum exhibits a garden full of rare and exotic plants. An incredible 30,000 plants of 3,000 species are exhibited here year-round. Kiseki no Hoshi’s approach to exhibiting plants is unique, creating an experience you won’t soon forget.

Accommodations Sumoto Hot Spring

Sumoto Onsen is the largest spa resort in Awaji Island. In 1993, new hot springs were discovered. At local ryokan and hotels, there are open-air baths with great views of the sea. The water at Sumoto Onsen is clean and said to be very good for the skin. At the Japanese inns and hotels, you can eat delicious seafood caught locally around Awaji Island.

Sumoto Castle

Perched atop 133m-tall Mt. Mikuma, Sumoto Castle boasts a magnificent stone wall piled high on its southern flank. This is the original wall, unchanged since the time the castle was built. From its vantage point on the summit, the castle commands a sweeping view of the City of Sumoto below and the sea beyond. Be sure to gaze on this panorama for yourself. The area around the castle is also famous for its cherry blossoms. At night the castle is beautifully illuminated.

Honpukuji Temple (Mizumido)

Honpuku-ji is a temple on Awaji Island. Of particular note at this temple is the main temple building, designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. This main temple building, Mizumi-do, is graced with a unique structure in which an image of the Buddha is enshrined under an elliptical pond in which water lilies and sacred lotuses bloom in profusion. The best time of year to view the water lilies is from May to September, while the sacred lotuses are most beautiful from June to July.
