The Golden route top of Winter

This route takes you through Hyogo Prefecture over 3 nights and 4 days.  You can enjoy history, culture, hot springs, cuisine, various workshops, nature, and shopping all in one package. On the first day, you will set out to a restaurant in Kobe for the famous Kobe Beef. We take a walk through hot-spring resort with yukata over Castle town on the second day. We observe Himeji Castle which is world heritage on the fourth day and, on the third day, experience traditional culture in Awaji Island. At night, you will stay in famous Onsen resorts such as Arima Onsen, Kinosaki Onsen, and Sumoto Onsen.

Walk around Kitano

Kitano Kobo no Machi (Kitano Meister Garden) is located in the Kitano area in Kobe. In a building that was once a primary school, there are sweets shops, bakeries and other assorted shops. Enjoy crafting traditional Japanese candles and taking part in other craft events. You can walk to the Ijinkan (historic Western residence) quarter, the Former Foreign Settlement and Kobe Chinatown from here.

Mt. Rokko

Tenran Observatory

Enjoy "Ten million‐dollar view by night" from Tenran Observatory on the top of Mt. Rokko, located nearby Rokko Cable Sanjo Station. The superb view which spread from Osaka to Wakayama is breathtaking. It is also chosen as one of "Japan Night View Heritage". There is a cafe where you can enjoy delicious food and drinks while looking out a night view.

Arima Winter

Arima Onsen is one of the oldest and the most famous hot spring in Japan. It is located 30 minutes by car from Osaka and Kobe, and in less than 1 hour from Kyoto.
The hot springs here are called 'Gold Springs', rich in iron, and has a color of reddish brown. The clear hot springs here are called 'Silver Springs'. It is highly recommended to explore the Onsen resort town with many gift shops. Enjoy delicious local cuisine at ryokans and hotels.

Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum

Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum is the memorial hall of Osamu Tezuka, a famous Japanese comic artist. The museum is located in Takarazuka city where Osamu Tezuka was born. Original prints, goods of famous characters such as of Astro Boy are on display. There is also a booth where visitors can make their own animation. The library has a variety of Osamu Tezuka manga for you to read. There are also versions in languages other than Japanese, too.

Sasayama Castle O-shoin

Sasayama Castle Ruins is one of the finest examples of castle architecture in Japan. Today only the massive stone walls are remained from the original castle. The current O-shoin, rebuilt in April 2000, exhibits how Sasayama Castle was built and the Castle town was formed in an earlier era. Surrounded by an outer moat brimming with water, the Castle Ruins is known as one of the best spot for cherry blossoms in spring. The traditional Japanese townscape remains nearby, such as Samurai residences and temples.

Botan Nabe

(Lunch) Botan Nabe

Botan Nabe is a local-special hotpot dish in Tamba area (Sasayama City and Tamba City). This signature cuisine is enjoyed with particular relish in the wintertime. The name 'Botan Nabe' comes from how it looks, the wild boar meat is sliced thin and placed on a plate just like a flower of peony (Botan in Japanese). It's a Miso based hotpot with wild boar and plentiful vegetables, and each restaurants have their own special miso or dashi (Japanese soup stock).

This is the only playhouse existing in Kinki area, built late in the Meiji era. Once closed in 1964, but restored with original stagesets such as stage‐passage, a trap cellar, a revolving stage.

Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork

Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork have been working to protect and breed "Kounotori" Oriental white stork. Oriental stork is designated as the prefectural bird of Hyogo Prefecture. Toyooka City, where the park is located, was the Oriental stork’s last habitat in Japan. Since September 2005, the park started releasing storks into the wild. The park has an observatory where you can see storks up close.

Kinosaki Onsen is said to be discovered by an "Kounotori", Oriental stork around 1400 years ago. It is a beautiful place with the willow trees planted on the banks of Otanigawa River. The traditional Japanese hot spring town is remained here, such as Japanese Ryokan made of wood. There are renowend 7 public baths in Kinosaki Onsen, that are more popular than baths in Ryokans. Enjoy visiting 7 baths wearing a Yukata (light cotton summer kimono).

Himeji Castle Winter

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is the first Japanese World Cultural Heritage Site registered by UNESCO recognized worldwide, and often called as "Shirasagi-jo" (White Heron Castle) because of its white plastered walls. After the 5-years restoration work, the castle was fully reopened in March 2015. It's one of the most beautiful castles in Japan, The scenery from Tenshukaku (castle tower) is magnificent. A guided tour for foreign tourists is available for free of charge.

Koko-en is a 3.5-hectare park with 9 different Japanese gardens located inside Himeji Castle. You can take a walk in traditional Japanese gardens. Famed for its beauty of cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn colored leaves, this park is an ideal place to enjoy four seasons in Japan and popular with visitors throughout a year. There is a restaurant inside the park, as well as a teahouse where you can enjoy matcha green tea and Japanese sweets.

Himeji Oden

(Lunch) Himeji Oden

Oden is a hot-pot dish eaten in Japanese homes, especially in the cold winter. To make oden, ingredients such as eggs, octopus and daikon are boiled in dashi (soup stock made from fish and kelp). Usually oden is eaten without any sauce, but in Himeji it is dipped in ginger soy sauce. The flavor gets cleaner and fresher. In Himeji City, over 60 restaurants serve this popular dish.

Awaji Puppet Theater

Ningyo Joruri (Japanese puppet show), traditional arts of Japan is still inherited in Awaji Island. There used to be various puppet troupes in Awaji island. They performed not only at their home theaters but in all over Japan. You can watch performance of Ningyo Joruri in Awaji Puppet Theater with the history of approximately 500 years. In Awaji Ningyo Joruri Museum located nearby, you can see the puppets and documents on display.

Uzushio Roadside Station

The closest Roadside Station to a real whirlpool in Japan. There are a restaurant and a cafe with stunning view of Onaruto Bridge, offering fresh and delicious local lunch. Also you'll find island's most extensive lineups of carefully selected souvenirs, including Awaji onions, seafood and many original products in the shop. There is 'Awajishima Onion Kitchen' restaurant, famous for 'Awajishima Burger' winner of the Local Burger Grand Prix. This Roadside Staiton is the very southern tip of Awaji Island, so make it the destination for your drive!

Sumoto Onsen is the largest spa resort in Awaji Island, where new hot spring were discovered in 1993. At local Ryokan and hotels, there are open-air baths with great views of the ocean. The water at Sumoto Onsen is clean and said to be very good for the skin. At the Japanese inns and hotels, you can eat delicious seafood caught locally around Awaji Island.

Izanagi-jingu Shrine

According to Japanese myth, Awaji Island is believed to be the origin of Japan. At Izanagi-jingu Shrine, the god Izanagi and the goddess Izanami, who created the land of Japan, are worshipped. Every month on the 22nd at 6:30pm, a special evening shrine viewing is held. The front shrine, main gate and great Torii are illuminated with ten lights. Moreover the entrance path to the shrine is lit with 300 candles, enfolding visitiors in fantastical atmosphere.

Awaji Highway Oasis

A place full of flowers and green to heal fatigue of trip. At Oasis building with big atrium, there is a Japanese restaurant "Mike-ya", sushi with fresh local fish at reasonable price "Sushitomi", cafes, and local products shops. Enjoy a nice walk to the park from Highway Oasis.
