Thousand Flames of Rakan-ji Temple

Rakan-ji Temple is famous for its numerous stone statues of Buddha, called Gohyaku-rakan or "the five hundred Buddhist priests". There are about 450 stone statues in the temple precincts. On August 8th, a rite called "Sento-e" is held, and the statues are illuminated with the light of thousand candles. Candles are lit as an offering to pray for ancestors.
