Kotoshironushi-jinja Shrine Mizukake Festival

This is a ritual performed at Kotoshironushi-jinja Shrine in Awaji Island. It is said that the tradition began with the local shipbuilders, who dedicated Mikoshi (portable shrine) to Kotoshironushi-jinja Shrine in prayer for the prosperity of the region. Another name for the festival is 'the fighting festival'. As the Mikoshi passes by, people splash water to it. After the mikoshi completes its parade through the town, it is carried into the sea in prayer for an abundant catch.
