Shoshazan Engyo-ji Temple

Located 371 meteres above sea level on top of Mt. Shosha, Engyo-ji is Tendai sect temple called "Mt. Hiei-zan in West". Here you can experience Shojin Ryori, the vegetarian cuisine of Tendai monks, and practicing Zazen, seated Zen meditation. Famous for its Butai-zukuri style (the building structure like a stage) similar to Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, and Daikodo (main hall) built in Muromachi Era, and the scenery that the temple harmonizes with nature is beautiful. It was selected as a filming location for TV shows and movies, one of which is the Hollywood movie The Last Samurai.
